Patchwork of State Laws on the Path to 100%: A Tale of Legislation and Free Markets

At-A-Glance:

It’s well established that some U.S. states are farther along on the transition to 100% renewable energy, while others are taking slower paths – a result of every state having its own legal framework on the topic of spurring innovation and setting standards on renewables.

Key Takeaways:

  • 13 states produced more than half their energy from renewables and/or nuclear last year
  • Experts say a national transition to 100% renewables is technically feasible
  • Some bills in Congress would require utilities to increase carbon-free electricity

Path To 100% Perspective:

While some proposals in Congress, such as the Clean Energy Standard Act, seek to speed up renewable adoption by forcing utilities to increase their sales of renewable and zero-carbon electricity, the current reality is that the free market is making a path to 100% more realistically achievable – especially as science & engineering advances help to lower costs.  So, while the legal pathway across 50 states may seem convoluted, the market may be the what helps us get there (ahead of any federal guidance).  Learn more in the S&P article entitled “US states face uneven paths in movement for 100% ‘clean energy’” on the S&P Global Market Intelligence section of their site.
